Has being late to work due to dancing clowns ever been a problem for you? Have you ever had to defend yourself against a giant iguana? Does the overture to The Music Man make you violently twitch? In Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus readers are immersed into what it would be like to live every day as if a herd of ballerinas were chasing you, without the inconvenience of actually having to run. This collection of truly bizarre short stories taken from the author, Allison Hawn’s, life takes one across the world and into the strangest crevices of civilization. The lessons learned through her adventures might very well save the reader if they too ever have to face birthing a cow, calming distraught technical support or death by furniture.

Ms. Hawn’s Circus is a collection of well put together short acts formed during her interesting life. I believe that she has learnt her life lessons, according to her summaries at the end of each episode after the curtain comes down.

Those lessons learnt came after trials and errors young adults go through growing up. Her writing brings out the funny side and or positive side of the situations she muddles through.

The situations she devils in are enjoyable to read and seemed to be geared to lessons for the young, but do have some universal axioms en-grained. Using comic references to popular and not so popular characters and events, she gets her points across colorfully, bringing the reader to a pause where they will contemplate what just transpired.

Funny most of the time, but sad in some instances, Allison tells it like it is in her writing. She doesn’t hold back any punches. She gives her interpretation of what transpired in her life.

This is not a book to read at one session, but a collection to be read one story at a time. The reader can go back many times for a laugh.

I have earmarked a few for reread, a laugh, and reference in my story telling.

Laugh out loud!! Reading this while on the plane - my seatmates thought I was crazy - I had to keep trying to stifle my laughing.

Allison has a very engaging style of writing, and the short story format made it easy to pick it up and start reading, but the great story-telling made me never wanting to put it down!
How could you not like a book with a title like this? Hawn made me laugh. It's as simple as that. The woman comes up with analogies that are so unique (well, really, bizarre) that she makes me a tad nervous. But, then, I'm not selecting her as a neighbor. You may not want to read this on public transportation. It's impossible to avoid laughing out loud and people will stare. Oh - and, disclaimer, the platypus image cemented my choice.
Experience builds character. In Allison Hawn’s original memoir, Life is a Circus Run by a Platypus, positive perspectives on her experiences teach her readers valuable life lessons. Mundane jobs like working at Subway or managing events at a conference center even have relevance when perceived through Hawn’s humanist eyes. She sees people for their contributions in light of their failures and shares the whimsical tales with colorful humor.

I enjoyed getting to know Ms. Hawn through her memoir. I like her and appreciate her wit. I highly recommend reading a few tales with friends during book club and sharing fun times with each other.

I look forward to reading her next installment. What weapons will she learn to shoot next?
The short story immediately followed by a clever moral is a nice little gimmick, although it does get kind of tired after a while. I felt the same way about the over-the-top wacky animal metaphors, too, but those seemed to subside later on. Some stories are less interesting than others, but they're all very brief, so if you're bored, just wait two pages and you'll be chuckling again. It's really light and really easy to read, and there are some truly hilarious lines in here.
This is BY FAR the FUNNIEST book I think I've ever read! I laughed and laughed until tears streamed down my face and my ribs hurt! It's probably the second book I'll ever consider re-reading (and actually do just that- the first being "You Suck" by Christopher Moore, which I've read three times). I wish I knew Ms. Hawn in real life- so maybe I'd have a chance to be apart of one of her hilarious life happenings! Amazing, hilarious book- do not miss this one!
A brilliantly written collection of short stories, humorously written, with no punches pulled. One of the greatest gifts we humans have is the ability to laugh at ourselves, and the author has this ability in spades.

Allison Hawn managed to bring her own experiences to life and although some seemed unbelievable, they were too unbelievable not to be true. She gave me a reason to laugh, to think, and to generally ponder over the absurdities of my own life.

I have already purchased her next book, Life is a Pirate Ship Run by a Velociraptor , and I am looking forward to laughing some more.
While reading this delightful collection, I nearly choked on my coffee. Proceed with caution, or at least put down your beverage before you read this hilarious book by Author Allison Hawn.

This is the true story of a young woman with a weirdness magnet. If something strange or bizarre is happening anywhere near her, she is involved, and not always by choice. She seems to accept her fate and tries to learn something from each event. In fact, at the end of each story she shares what can be learned so that the reader might avoid being part of a similar disaster.

A quote from one of the stories when the author agreed to pet sit for a friend, “I forgot to mention that Mr. Scruffles can only eat food that’s been cooked in a ceramic bowl made by Romanian Monks and warmed to exactly 94 degrees (and no, they won’t say whether they mean Fahrenheit or Celsius) and prayed over by a Voodoo priest or he’ll throw up on your pillow at four in the morning.”
